A vibrant and eclectic mix of involved, community-minded people define the character of Ann Arbor. Nearly 95% of the more than 100,000 adults who live here have a high school diploma and two-thirds of them have completed four or more years in college. Interestingly, about 20% of the population speaks English as a second language, with representatives from every race, religion and nationality calling Ann Arbor home. The median income is nearly 20% higher than the national average and the crime rate is significantly lower – especially in the area of crimes against women. A true cultural melting pot, Ann Arbor is still considered to be a common-sense, no-nonsense Midwestern town with an informed and socially liberal attitude.
